Search Engine Instructions

The search engine searches a database of words indexed from the pages of all web sites on this server. Common words (like "i, a, the, and, is" etc.) are ignored. The engine performs an "AND" search - all terms entered in the search box must be present for a page to be matched. The order terms are entered is not important and searching is not case sensitive.

A search "term" consists of alphanumeric characters (A through Z and 0 through 9) separated by a space. Multiple search terms, separated by spaces, can be used to narrow the search. Do not use quotation marks since searching by "phrase" is not supported.

Tips and Common Mistakes

  • Spelling counts! If you don't spell correctly, you probably won't get the results you want.
  • Do not include terms like "AND" or "OR" (These common words are ignored. By default, all searches are "AND.")
  • Do not include symbols like "+" or "-" (These characters are ignored.)
  • Separate search terms with spaces. Do not use commas.
  • When searching for a phrase, enter "keywords" from phrase, not the entire phrase. Example: "sorry dave can't" would be recommended for the phrase, "I'm sorry, Dave. I can't do that."
  • Use multiple terms to refine your search. For example, the term "star" could match too many different types of results. (Star Trek, Star Wars, Stargate, Battlestar Gallactica, etc.)
  • If you can't remember all of the exact terms for what you are searching for, just enter the terms you can remember.
  • Avoid using extra search terms when not needed. For example: try "caveman" instead of "caveman movie." The extra term may eliminate some or all of the desired matches.
  • Use the shortest version of the word you are looking for. Try "slither" instead of "slithered, slithers, slithery." (Using the longer version won't find the shorter one.)
  • If you are unsure of spelling, enter the part of the term that you can remember. Try "boondog" for "boondoggle."
